Powder River Transportation has a long history of service throughout Wyoming and surrounding areas. In 1977, Worthen Van Service began operating in Edgemont, South Dakota, Gillette and Guernsey, Wyoming, and Sterling, Colorado. This company would be the building block for what would be big in years to come. In 1981, Powder River Transportation was formed. At that time, Powder River began serving the needs of coal mines throughout the Powder River Basin area. A schedule busline was not far in the making.
In 1983, Powder River Transportation began busline operations to locations throughout Wyoming. Due to the discontinuing service of Trailways in 1987, Powder River Transportation began extensive schedule busline service throughout the state in the form of mini-buses. It didn't take long before the demand of full size coaches was needed. Once again, Powder River stepped up to the plate and provided such coaches.
Today, Powder River currently operates 51 full size motor coaches for various operations including schedule busline operations, coal mine shuttles, and charter operations. Powder River Transportation currently operates 65 vans throughout Wyoming, Montana, and Washington, to support various railroad operations. As for passenger busline service, Powder River currently serves communities throughout Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Colorado, and Nebraska. Powder River looks forward to serving the communities above and many new communities for years to come.
